Small carriers have more than one way to grow with CRST
Small carriers may face tighter broker vetting, more frequent documentation reviews, and variable access to loads. Operators with their own truck or an established book of business may consider whether a different operating structure aligns with their circumstances and business goals.
CRST offers two possible affiliation paths designed for different business needs. The following summarizes each option.

Both options below are alternatives to consider based on how you want to operate. Under either option, you would operate as an independent business rather than as a CRST employee, subject to the applicable agreement, legal requirements and program standards.
Independent contractors control how they operate their businesses, subject to applicable law and their agreements. Freight volume and earnings are not guaranteed.
Path 1: Owner Operator
Built for experienced CDL-A drivers who own or lease a truck and are interested in access to freight opportunities through CRST. As an owner-operator contracted with CRST, available features and options may include:
- Access to freight opportunities across a national network, subject to availability, with no forced dispatch
- The choice to haul dry van, flatbed and specialty freight
- Weekly settlement options, subject to the applicable agreement and program terms
- Revenue-sharing options, fuel surcharges and fuel discounts, funded fuel cards, discounts on tires, mechanical repairs and “on the road” roadside assistance.
- Access to support from a dedicated freight coordinator, a preventative maintenance program, and 24/7 assistance, subject to applicable program terms and availability.
These are voluntary business benefits available to contractors who choose them. Safety sits at the center of how CRST operates and informs CRST’s policies, programs, and support resources.
Path 2: Agent
Built for those who run an established book of business and need capacity and back-office support to move more freight without adding overhead. As an authorized freight agent for CRST, you may find:
- Nationwide capacity
- Dedicated support, in-house brokerage tools with integrated pricing and bidding, and lead generation
- Access to a secure dual-authentication portal
- Access to the web-based CRST Agent Operating System for managing freight, tracking, settlement information and performance data, subject to applicable program terms
You continue operating your independent business, subject to the applicable agency agreement, legal requirements, and CRST program standards.
With freedom, flexibility and unmatched support, CRST empowers you to grow your business on your terms. We have the tools, partnerships and freight opportunities to make your business goals a reality.

A safety-first culture
CRST emphasizes safety practices and compliance as part of its operating approach and customer service model.
Premium loads and equipment
CRST's equipment is constantly updating with new technology. Especially safety features such as Detroit Assurance, CDL Saving Collision Equipment, Intelligent Cruise and more.
- Tighter broker vetting. Brokers may be asking harder questions before tendering any loads.
- More documentation scrutiny. Safety files, insurance records, and inspection histories might get checked more often.
- Less predictable freight. Shifts in broker access can make planning ahead feel like guesswork.
- A heavier admin load. Billing, collections, compliance and maintenance planning can eat hours you could spend earning.
- Constant pressure to stay compliant. When standards rise, a gap in your records may create compliance concerns.
